version of this story that plays out dozens of times every week at travel agencies in Cusco. A traveler arrives in Peru having planned everything carefully except one thing. They have their flights, their hotel, their train tickets and their itinerary. What they do not have is a Machu Picchu entrance ticket, because they assumed they could sort that out when they got there, or they tried to book online and found the system confusing, or they simply did not know that availability was something they needed to think about three months ago.

This article exists to make sure that does not happen to you. It explains exactly how far in advance you need to book for each circuit, which months create the most pressure on availability, what the realistic options are if you have left it late and how to approach the booking process so that your visit date and your circuit choice are both secured before you book anything else.

THE SHORT ANSWER

If you are visiting between May and September and you want Circuit 2A, Circuit 3A (Huayna Picchu) or Circuit 1A (Machu Picchu Mountain), book your Machu Picchu ticket immediately. For those circuits at those times of year, three to four months is the minimum lead time and five to six months is more realistic for peak dates in June and July. For other circuits and other months, two to three months is a safer minimum than most travelers expect. For the very lowest season months of February, March and November, some circuits may be available with as little as two to three weeks notice, but this is not something to rely on.

The single most important piece of advice about Machu Picchu tickets is this: book your entrance ticket before you book your train. Trains to Aguas Calientes are easier to reschedule than Machu Picchu tickets, and having a train seat but no entrance ticket is one of the most frustrating situations a traveler can find themselves in.

WHY MACHU PICCHU TICKETS SELL OUT

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture limits the number of visitors per circuit, per entry time slot and per day as part of its ongoing effort to protect the site from the damage caused by overcrowding. Those limits are firm. When a slot is full, it is full. No amount of negotiation, no travel agency connection and no last-minute availability tool will produce a ticket that does not exist.

The circuits most affected by capacity constraints are those with the lowest per-slot limits. Huayna Picchu (Circuit 3A) allows only 150 visitors per slot across two daily entry times, giving a total daily capacity of 300 people for the entire mountain. Circuit 1D (Inca Bridge) allows only 20 visitors per slot. Circuit 3D (Huchuy Picchu) allows only 25. For these circuits, early booking is not a preference but a practical necessity for anyone with a fixed travel date.

Even the higher-capacity circuits feel the pressure during peak season. Circuit 2A, which allows several hundred visitors per daily slot and runs from 06:00 through 15:00, can be fully booked for every slot across multiple consecutive days during the months of June, July and August. When that happens, the only option is a different circuit or a different date.

BOOKING WINDOWS BY MONTH

June, July and August — Peak Season

These are the three months when Machu Picchu operates closest to its maximum daily capacity across all circuits. The dry season weather, the school holiday timing in the northern hemisphere and the concentration of organized tour groups from Europe, North America and Australia create a level of demand that significantly exceeds available tickets for the most popular circuits.

For Circuit 2A and Circuit 3A during these months, a booking window of four to six months is the realistic minimum. For Circuit 1B, Circuit 2B and Circuit 3B, three to four months is more typical. For the very limited circuits including 1D and 3D, availability at five months out can already be tight for popular entry times.

April, May and September — Shoulder Season

These months offer the best balance of favorable weather and manageable demand. The dry season extends through this period with relatively reliable conditions at the site, and the pressure on availability, while still significant, is somewhat easier to navigate than the peak months. Two to three months of advance booking is generally sufficient for most circuits, with four months recommended for Circuit 3A and three months for Circuit 2A.

October, November and March — Transitional Months

Availability opens up considerably in these months, though conditions at the site become more variable with more frequent afternoon rain and cloud. Circuit 2A and Circuit 3A are still the circuits to book earliest, but a lead time of six to eight weeks is often sufficient. Some of the less popular circuits including 1D and 3D can occasionally be secured with two to three weeks notice.

December and January — Wet Season

The wet season brings the highest rainfall of the year to Machu Picchu and the lowest visitor numbers, which means that availability across almost all circuits is at its most relaxed. Booking four to six weeks in advance is generally sufficient for any circuit. The trade-off is weather, with afternoon cloud and rain common and the site occasionally slippery underfoot. The landscape is at its most dramatically green during these months and many experienced travelers actively prefer the wet season for the atmosphere and the absence of crowds.

February — Closed Month for the Inca Trail

February is the only month when the Inca Trail is fully closed for maintenance. Machu Picchu itself remains open throughout February, and the closure of the trail actually reduces some of the pressure on entrance ticket availability as the large volume of trekkers who would normally arrive via the Sun Gate on the fourth day of the trail are absent. Availability in February is generally the most relaxed of any month.

THE CIRCUITS THAT SELL OUT FASTEST

In order of how quickly they typically reach full capacity for a given date, from fastest to slowest:

Circuit 3A (Huayna Picchu) is consistently the first to sell out for any popular date. The combination of the lowest capacity of any regularly available circuit and the highest demand makes this the most urgent booking in all of Machu Picchu’s ticketing system. For peak season dates, five to six months is the realistic minimum.

Circuit 2A (Classic Designed) is the second fastest seller for peak season dates. As the most complete route through the most significant areas of the citadel, it attracts the broadest range of travelers and its higher capacity is offset by proportionally higher demand. Four months is the recommended minimum for June and July dates.

Circuit 1A (Machu Picchu Mountain) sells out quickly for the morning entry slots, particularly the 07:00 and 09:00 access times that allow hikers to reach the summit before the clouds build. Three to four months is recommended for peak season.

Circuit 1D (Inca Bridge) with its capacity of only twenty people per slot can sell out weeks in advance even outside peak season for the most popular entry times. Two to three months is recommended year round.

Circuit 3D (Huchuy Picchu) with twenty-five people per slot is similarly capacity-constrained. Two to three months is recommended.

Circuits 1B, 1C, 2B and 3B generally hold availability longer than the circuits above, but morning entry slots for these circuits during peak season can still be fully booked six to eight weeks out.

WHAT TO DO IF AVAILABILITY IS ALREADY GONE

If you have checked availability for your preferred circuit on your preferred date and found it fully booked, you have several realistic options depending on how much flexibility you have.

The first option is to change your entry time. The most popular slots fill first and there is often availability on the same circuit at less popular times later in the day. A 12:00 or 13:00 entry to Circuit 2A on a date where the 07:00 and 08:00 slots are gone is still a meaningful visit to the most important circuit at the site.

The second option is to choose a different circuit. If Circuit 2A is fully booked for your date, Circuit 3B covers many of the same architectural highlights with a slightly different route and may still have availability. If Circuit 3A is gone, Circuit 3D offers a mountain experience with a more accessible trail. Our team is experienced in finding the best available alternative for the experience you originally wanted and can advise on which substitute circuit comes closest to your original preference.

The third option is to change your visit date by one or two days. Availability patterns are not uniform across a week and a day that is fully booked may be followed by a day with good availability on the same circuit. If you have any flexibility in your Cusco schedule, even a single day’s shift can open up the circuit and time you want.

The fourth option, and the one that requires the most adjustment, is to reconsider your travel dates entirely. For travelers who have not yet booked flights, moving the trip from July to October or from August to November can transform the booking experience completely.

THE MOST COMMON BOOKING MISTAKES

Booking the train before the ticket is the single most common error. Travelers secure their train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, often months in advance, and then discover that no Machu Picchu tickets exist for their date. The train can usually be rescheduled with some effort and cost. The ticket cannot be created from nothing.

Assuming the government website reflects true availability is another frequent mistake. The official portal shows official availability but is not always updated in real time and can be technically unreliable for international users. Booking through a licensed agency provides a more reliable view of actual availability and handles the technical process on your behalf.

Booking a circuit without understanding what it covers leads to disappointment that is entirely avoidable. A traveler who books Circuit 1D (Inca Bridge) expecting the full citadel experience of Circuit 2A will be confused and frustrated when the visit covers only a narrow path to an observation point above a bridge. Read the circuit description before you book or ask for a recommendation based on your interests and fitness level.

Not accounting for the entry time in relation to the train schedule is a logistical mistake that can result in arriving at Machu Picchu after your entry slot has passed. Each circuit has a specific entry time and arriving thirty minutes late means you have missed your window. The bus journey from Aguas Calientes takes twenty to twenty-five minutes and there can be queues at the bus stop. When coordinating your train arrival with your entry time, build in a minimum of ninety minutes between train arrival in Aguas Calientes and your Machu Picchu entry slot.

HOW TO BOOK WITH INKA TICKETS

Send us your preferred visit date, the number of people in your group, your visitor categories and any preferences about circuits or entry times. Our team checks real-time availability, advises on the best option for your specific situation and processes the booking through official channels. If your first choice is not available, we present the closest alternatives immediately so you can make an informed decision without losing more time.

         Check Availability for My Dates

How Far in Advance Should You Book Machu Picchu Tickets And What Happens If You Leave It Too Late Find out exactly how far in advance you need to book Machu Picchu tickets in 2026, which circuits sell out first, which months are most difficult and what your options are if availability is already gone.
