Expedition vs Vistadome vs Hiram Bingham, Which Train to Machu Picchu Is Right for You

Peru Rail operates three very different train services to Machu Picchu. This guide compares the Expedition, Vistadome and Hiram Bingham in detail so you can choose the right service for your budget, your schedule and what you want from the journey.

The train journey to Machu Picchu is one of the most scenic rail routes in South America. From Ollantaytambo the tracks descend through the Sacred Valley following the course of the Urubamba River as the mountains close in on either side, the altitude drops sharply and the vegetation transforms from the dry scrub of the Andean highlands to the dense, mist-covered cloud forest of the lower valley. By the time the train pulls into Aguas Calientes, the town that sits at the foot of the citadel, the sense of arrival in somewhere genuinely remote and extraordinary is complete.

Peru Rail operates three fundamentally different services on this route: the Expedition, the Vistadome and the Hiram Bingham. They share the same tracks and the same departure stations but they are otherwise entirely different experiences in terms of comfort, service, price and what the journey itself feels like. Choosing the right one requires understanding what each service actually delivers and being honest about which of those things matter to you.

Inca Rail also operates on this route with its Voyager and The 360° services, which we cover separately. This article focuses on the Peru Rail services because they are the most widely used and because the differences between them are the ones that generate the most questions from travelers planning their first visit to Machu Picchu.

THE EXPEDITION, THE RELIABLE EVERYDAY TRAIN

What it is

The Expedition is Peru Rail’s standard service and the train that the majority of independent travelers take to Machu Picchu. It is a comfortable, practical and well-maintained service that does exactly what a train to Machu Picchu needs to do: it gets you there on time, in reasonable comfort, with large enough windows to enjoy the journey and at a price that leaves budget for everything else you want to do in Peru.

The carriages

The Expedition carriages are clean and well maintained with assigned seating in a two-plus-two configuration. The seats are comfortable for the journey duration of approximately one hour and forty minutes from Ollantaytambo, or around three hours and twenty minutes from Poroy. Each seat faces a large window on the carriage wall that provides a clear view of the valley and cloud forest as the train descends. Tables are available between facing seat pairs and the Andean-inspired decoration throughout the carriage gives the interior a character that is distinctly different from a generic commuter train.

The onboard experience

A café bar service operates throughout the journey offering hot drinks, cold drinks, snacks and a small selection of meals. There is no included food or beverage service — everything is purchased on board. An onboard shop carries a small selection of baby alpaca products and souvenirs. Music plays softly throughout the journey and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable without being particularly special.

The practical reality

The Expedition is the train that works for most travelers most of the time. If you are visiting Machu Picchu on a budget or if the train is simply a means of getting from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes rather than an experience in its own right, the Expedition delivers everything you need. It departs frequently throughout the day in both directions, has the widest range of available departure times of any service and is consistently reliable in terms of punctuality and comfort.

Price range: approximately $54 to $75 USD per person one way from Ollantaytambo, varying by departure time and booking lead time Tempo de viagem: approximately 1h 40min from Ollantaytambo / 3h 20min from Poroy Departures: multiple daily in both directions Best for: budget-conscious travelers, practical travelers, those for whom the train is transport rather than experience.

THE VISTADOME, THE SCENIC UPGRADE

What it is

The Vistadome is Peru Rail’s mid-range service and the train that most travelers who have done any research end up choosing. The name refers to the panoramic windows that define the carriage design: large glass panels that extend upward into the roof, giving passengers an almost unobstructed view of the mountains, river and cloud forest as the train winds through the Sacred Valley. When the sun is on the mountains and the cloud forest is vivid green below the ridgelines, the Vistadome makes the journey genuinely feel like part of the Machu Picchu experience rather than a preliminary to it.

The carriages

The Vistadome carriages feature the same two-plus-two seating configuration as the Expedition but with the crucial addition of the panoramic roof windows that change the visual experience of the journey fundamentally. Looking up through the glass at the mountain walls on either side of the valley as the train curves through the lower Sacred Valley is something that simply does not exist on the Expedition. The carriages are also slightly more refined in their fit and finish than the standard service.

The onboard experience

The Vistadome includes a complimentary snack and beverage service rather than the pay-as-you-go café of the Expedition, which means that drinks and a light snack are brought to your seat during the journey without additional cost. On the return journey from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, some Vistadome departures include an onboard cultural presentation featuring traditional Andean music and a fashion show of traditional textiles and clothing. These presentations vary by departure and are not guaranteed on every service, but when they happen they are a genuine addition to the return journey experience.

The practical reality

The Vistadome costs more than the Expedition, typically by $25 to $35 USD per person per leg of the journey. Whether that difference is worth it depends on how much the journey itself matters to your overall Machu Picchu experience. For travelers who are making this trip once and want the journey to feel as significant as the destination, the panoramic windows of the Vistadome make a real difference. For travelers who regard the train as transport and will be focused on what happens at the other end, the Expedition covers the same function at lower cost.

The morning departures on the Vistadome are consistently the most popular, particularly the early slots between 06:00 and 08:00 from Ollantaytambo, when the light is at its best for the views through the panoramic windows and the cloud forest is at its most dramatically atmospheric.

Price range: approximately $75 to $92 USD per person one way from Ollantaytambo, varying by departure time Tempo de viagem: approximately 1h 40min from Ollantaytambo / 3h 20min from Poroy Departures: multiple daily in both directions Best for: travelers who want the journey to be part of the experience, photographers, first-time visitors to Machu Picchu-

THE HIRAM BINGHAM, THE LUXURY EXPERIENCE

What it is

The Hiram Bingham is one of the great luxury train experiences in South America and a genuinely different proposition from either the Expedition or the Vistadome. Named after the American historian and explorer who brought Machu Picchu to international attention in 1911 and operated in partnership with Belmond, the luxury travel brand behind the Venice Simplon Orient Express and some of the world’s finest hotels, the Hiram Bingham is not simply a means of getting to Machu Picchu. It is a full-day curated experience in which the train journey, the onboard dining and the guided visit to the citadel are all part of a single coordinated program.

The carriages

The Hiram Bingham carriages are impeccably designed with polished mahogany paneling, Art Deco-inspired fittings, white tablecloths, crystal glassware and the kind of attention to detail in every surface and fixture that characterizes Belmond’s approach across their entire portfolio. The observation car at the end of the train has open sides that allow passengers to stand and watch the Sacred Valley landscape pass by without glass between them and the mountain air. It is an extraordinary space to occupy as the train curves through the lower valley.

The onboard experience

The Hiram Bingham operates once daily from Poroy station near Cusco, departing in the morning and arriving in Aguas Calientes in time for a guided visit to the citadel before the return in the late afternoon. Brunch is served on the outbound journey in the dining car, with a menu that reflects Peru Rail’s partnership with Belmond’s culinary team and represents a genuinely high quality restaurant experience on a moving train. On the return journey, dinner is served and the bar car offers cocktails, wine and Peruvian spirits with live music from a local musician who plays through the evening departure.

A certified guide escorts passengers from Aguas Calientes station to Machu Picchu and accompanies the group throughout the visit, providing a structured and informative tour of the main circuit before allowing free time to explore independently. The guide is included in the Hiram Bingham price and is part of what makes the service a complete day experience rather than a transport arrangement.

The practical reality

The Hiram Bingham costs significantly more than the Expedition or Vistadome, with prices typically starting around $460 USD per person for the outbound journey from Poroy including brunch, the guided Machu Picchu visit and the return dinner service. This is not a train ticket in the conventional sense but a full-day premium experience that happens to include transportation.

The Hiram Bingham is the right choice for travelers who are celebrating a significant occasion, for those who consider the quality of the overall experience as important as the destination itself and for couples or small groups who want Machu Picchu to be the centerpiece of an extraordinary day rather than an item on an itinerary. It is not the right choice for travelers whose primary concern is the citadel itself and who want to maximize their time inside the site at minimum cost.

One practical consideration: the Hiram Bingham departs from Poroy station rather than Ollantaytambo, which means the train journey is approximately three hours and twenty minutes each way rather than one hour and forty minutes. This longer journey is what gives the experience its full-day character but also means arriving in Aguas Calientes later than travelers on the Expedition or Vistadome from Ollantaytambo.

Price range: approximately $460 USD per person outbound / $465 USD return, including all dining and guided Machu Picchu visit Tempo de viagem: approximately 3h 20min from Poroy (Cusco) Departures: once daily in each direction Best for: luxury travelers, special occasion trips, travelers for whom the full experience matters as much as the destination.

INCA RAIL, THE ALTERNATIVE OPERATORS

While this article focuses on Peru Rail, it is worth noting that Inca Rail operates two services on the Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes route that represent genuine alternatives to the Peru Rail options.

The Voyager is Inca Rail’s standard service and a direct competitor to the Peru Rail Expedition. The carriages are modern and comfortable with large windows and an attentive onboard team. The 360° is Inca Rail’s premium service, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides and a partially open observation platform at the rear that creates an immersive viewing experience comparable to the Vistadome. Both services depart exclusively from Ollantaytambo.

We cover both Inca Rail services in detail in a separate article comparing all the train options on the Machu Picchu route.
